In Hindi, Barsaat means "rain" and it is loosely translated as "Monsoon". The film is set in the hot dry season of North India. It portrays a romantic relationship between a young man, Vijay (Rajendra Kumar) and a young woman, Radha (Nalini Jaywant), who are from different social classes. They fall in love after meeting on a rainy day during the monsoon season. Vijay lives with his aunt as his parents have died and he has no other relatives, but he doesn't mind as she takes care of him very well. Radha lives with her mother, a maid and a younger brother who has a disability. She is the only daughter of a renowned judge. They both have their own problems and needs, but eventually they find the time to be together. Radha confesses her love for Vijay and he reciprocates it, but he does not want to take any chance of hurting his aunt's heart so they remain friends. But as their love grows deeper it becomes difficult for them to remain friends as Vijay loves Radha very much and gets jealous of anything that can cause pain to her or her family.The film was one of the top best-selling movie in 1952 with a box office collection of . The film's music director was Naushad and the lyricist was Shakeel Badayuni. The playback singer was Ahmed Rushdi and the singers were Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. The song "Dil Diwana Dil Diwana" is based on the carnatic raga known as Shubhapantuvarali, "Kuch Kehta Hai Dil Mein" is based on Kalyani Nattai (raga), and "Barsaat Mein Bahar Aaye" is based on Bilaskhani Todi. The movie had a sequel, popularly known as Barsaat Ki Raat . The film was released on 14 May 1952. The music director Naushad did the job of composing all the songs in two days. He also made an arrangement of the song "Barsaat Mein Bahar Aaye" in an hour before his departure to Bombay. The song became so popular that it was played at every command performance in every city where it was screened, and over night, the song went viral in Bombay. The film had a running time of 115 minutes; this was unusually long for a movie in those days. The film met with good response and this led to another sequel titled Barsaat Ki Raat (I). According to Box Office India, it collected 19. 5 million in the first week.The film's story is loosely based on the film "Zindagi" (1941), directed by Mehboob Khan and starring Nur Jehan and Nargis. Nur Jehan had played a highly successful version of the same story in the 1940 film based on her own novel "Zindagi", and she was interested in turning it into a musical comedy.
